Principal Investigator

Anthi Karnaouri is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Crop Science of Agricultural University of Athens (AUA). She is author or co-author of 48 research publications in Peer Reviewed International Journals (>1500 citations in Scopus, Hirsch (h)-index= 23) and >75 presentations in international and national conference proceedings. Her research interests are focused on the fields of:

  • Cloning, heterologous expression, production and biochemical characterization of novel fungal biocatalysts that are involved in lignocellulose degradation.
  • Microbial fermentation processes both in small-scale cultures and bioreactors for the production of useful products including, among others, proteins, mycelial biomass, lactic acid, ω-3 fatty acids and nanocellulose.
  • Development of cell and enzyme-mediated biocatalytic processes for the bioconversion of by-products from biorefineries, as well as different pollutants to high-added value compounds including, among others, different streams from biomass pretreatment, lignocellulose-derived furans, synthetic polymers – plastics and other xenobiotic compounds.
